Statistical Studies on Hemophilia in Korea (The Third Report)

Abstract
Two hundreds cases of hemophilia which were reported by nine medical centers in
Korea were reviewed and analyzed.
One hundred sixty-four cases (82% of total) of the patients were belonged to the
pediatric age group on the first visit.
One case was female and the other cases were males.
A positive family history was obtained in 47.4% of the cases.
The common complaints were bleeding tendency such as purpura, ecchymosis, gingival
bleeding, prolonged bleeding following minor trauma and joint symptoms related to the
hemarthrosis. In younger age group, the bleeding tendency was the common complaint
and about 8% of the patients had a episode of convulsion due to intracranial
hemorrhage.
The incidence of individual type of hemophilia was as following: Hemophilia A; 80.8%,
Hemophilia B; 15.2%, Hemophilia C; 4.0%. In 12.1% of the cases, coagulation time was
within normal limits. The level of Factor ¥· or ¥¸ were less than 10% of normal in all
cases (29 cases) assayed. Less .than 2% were 16 cases, 2¡­5% were 10 cases and 5¡­
10% were 3 cases.
